Excerpt from Sermons The following poithumous Sermons are fe le ted from the numerous weekly productions of the author, written for the infiru lion of his people, and not with any View to publication. They are print ed at the earnefc defire of thofe, who were impreffed with the excellency of his preaching and who con ceived that a compliance with this defire would not merely gratify the partiality of friendfhip but ferve to'perpetuate the memory of eminent worth, pro. Mote the general edification, and confer honour upon the American pulpit. The fele tion has been made with a joint regard to merit in compofition, and importance in matter. Whilfi: it was judged that fidelity to the original forbade any alterations, concern for the literary reputation of the author, was relieved by the knowledge of his remarkable correct. Nefs in whatever he wrote, and a confequent belief that a volume of his difcourfes would appear with greater advantage than molt pofihumous productions. Should this work meet the favourable reception ex. Pe ted, it is contemplated to publifh another fmall volume of Sermons, addreflfed to the young, and which the public would probably have received from the author's own hand, had he lived to execute his intention.
