First published in 1842. Mogridge (1787-1854), chiefly known by his pseudonym of 'Old Humphrey', was a prolific 19th century writer, poet, and author of children's books and religious tracts. He published around 200 works, some appearing under other pseudonyms such as 'Jeremy Jaunt', 'Peter Parley', and 'Old Father Thames', and the Religious Tract Society estimated they had sold more than 15 million copies of his works worldwide by the time he died.
