Excerpt from Speech of Charles Francis Adams of Massachusetts, December 22, 1902: At the Banquet of the New England Society, of Charleston, South Carolina Mr. President, and Ladies and Gentlemen of the New England Society of Charleston: Though this is a Yule-tide festival, being, by descent at least, a Puritan, I shall, after the fashion of the Puritans, open with a text, thence proceeding to improve the occasion. Ifyou will turn to the twelfth chapter of Exodus, you will there find it written: And this day shall be unto you for a memorial; and ye shall keep it a feast to the Lord throughout your generations; ye shall keep it a feast by an ordinance forever.

And it shall come to pass, when your children shall say unto you, What mean ye by this service?
