A story of humanity, resilience and courage against the backdrop of Robert Mugabe's tyrannical regime, it captures the grandeur and allure of Africa in stark contrast to the anarchy, warfare and tribal conflict that have ravaged Zimbabwe. SPINDRIFT is a realistic portrayal of life in the country, beautifully and sensitively written, and humorous at times.

Peter has an idyllic childhood in 1970s Rhodesia but as unrest in the country escalates during the War of Liberation, his world is shattered. A young black boy found orphaned in the ruins of an African village is adopted by his family and a propitious friendship develops. The family farm is attacked by nationalist guerrillas, and after Independence it is seized by youths claiming to be war veterans seeking compensation. The family is compelled to emigrate and becomes part of the Zimbabwean diaspora.

The author is well versed in the history and African traditions of Zimbabwe, and his love, empathy and understanding of the country are apparent in his story.

  • A spell-binding read

    by on

As someone who knows next to nothing about the situation in Zimbabwe, former Rhodesia, this book was an excellent eye-opener. Parts were certainly not easy to read because the author doesn't sugar-coat the facts and the harsh reality can be rather shocking. I found it very hard to put the book down and once I had finished it, the events that are so well described in it continued to occupy my thoughts. How is it possible that so little is written about the atrocities that continue to happen in Zimbabwe to this day? Not only has the author written eloquently about his own memories and experiences but he has obviously researched the history of Zimbabwe extremely well, making this book an education in itself. If this book was pure fiction, I would be rather concerned about the state of mind of the author but knowing that it is based on fact makes my heart go out to all the innocent victims of the corruption in this country under Mugabe's rule. I would recommend Spindrift to everyone - learn about Zimbabwe and about the experiences of millions of its former inhabitants. You will be richer for it.
