It is 1939, and nine-year-old Agatha Broward is excited to be going to summer camp, until she discovers, part-way through her journey, that she is actually going to an orphanage. Stunned and hurt, angry and fearful, she then finds herself in a lovely community, with kindly adults and friendly and welcoming playmates, and the promise of far more fun than she ever would have imagined was to be had in any orphanage, anywhere. As the years unfold, we are treated to glimpses of a childhood filled with many delights, and a young girl blossoming into a happy and accomplished teen, who views the institution as home and treasures her many friends, as well as the matrons, as if they were family. Corinne Elliott's colorful writing style, full of humor and heart, paired with the compelling nature of the stories, makes this lovely memoir an easy and heart-warming read.
