In this groundbreaking modern fantasy series, dragons walk among us in human form.

"There are a dozen 'St. George' soldiers hiding in that maze," my trainer said. "All hunting you. All looking to kill you. Welcome to phase two of your training, hatchling."

Long ago, dragons were hunted to near extinction by the Order of St. George, a legendary society of dragonslayers. Hiding in human form and growing their numbers in secret, the dragons of Talon have become strong and cunning, and they're positioned to take over the world with humans none the wiser.

Ember and Dante Hill are the only sister and brother known to dragonkind. Trained to infiltrate society, Ember wants to live the teen experience and enjoy a summer of freedom before taking her destined place in Talon. But destiny is a matter of perspective, and a rogue dragon will soon challenge everything Ember has been taught. As Ember struggles to accept her future, she and her brother are hunted by the Order of St. George.

Soldier Garret Xavier Sebastian has a mission to seek and destroy all dragons, and Talon's newest recruits in particular. But he cannot kill unless he is certain he has found his prey - and nothing is certain about Ember Hill. Faced with Ember's bravery, confidence and all-too-human desires, Garret begins to question everything that the Order has ingrained in him - and what he might be willing to give up to find the truth about dragons.

We all know dragons are only the stuff of myths and fairytales, right? But what if they lived among us, appearing and behaving as ordinary humans? In Julie Kagawa's Talon, dragons have the ability to shift into human form, adapting to survive and avoid their enemy; the Order of St. George.

Born in Talon, the hidden and isolated dragon capital, Ember and her twin, Dante, are hatchling dragons entering the human world for the first time, learning to blend in among humans. Ecstatic to be away from the watchful eyes of her elders, Ember is keen to throw herself into the life of an ordinary teenager. However, things don't go as planned when a rogue dragon and soldiers of St. George learn her location and force her to question her loyalties.

Conflicted, Ember must choose between a safe, but restricted life with Talon or leave it all behind and become a rogue, hunted by Talon and the Order alike.

Talon was an easy, enjoyable read, with a naive but feisty protagonist who thinks for herself. Sadly, Talon suffers from a rather predictable story line and love triangle. Much of the plot revolves around the budding romance at the expense of character development and world building. An example of this deficiency is evident in the vague descriptions of Talon, which, considering Ember's origin and its importance to the story is unusual. Although Ember has spent her entire life in Talon, her homeland is mentioned only briefly throughout the novel. However, Kagawa made up for it at with an action packed and suspenseful ending leaving you eager for the next book. Overall, a good start to the Talon saga.

Light and easy read but not everyone will enjoy it. I found some parts slightly less captivating than others with a lack of character development. The plot got a little lost but overall it was ok. Younger fantasy audiences will find this one to their liking.
