Madame de Stael (1766-1817) was a French woman of letters whose lifetime overlapped with the events of the French Revolution and the Napoleonic era. These memoirs covering the period 1800-1812, left unfinished at the time of her death, were edited by her son and published posthumously. This English translation appeared in 1821.
