Jasper Fforde's new fantastical satire: what happens when a family of human-sized, human-like rabbits moves in next door?

Peter Knox lives quietly in one of those small country villages that's up for the Village Garden of the Year award. Until Doc and Constance Rabbit move in next door, upsetting the locals (many of them members of governing political party United Kingdom Against Rabbit Population), complicating Peter's job as a Rabbit Spotter, and forcing him to take a stand, moving from unconscious leporiphobe to active supporter of the UK's amiable and peaceful population of anthropomorphised rabbits.

As with all JF books, there is so much to take in that it usually means reading multiple times to truly absorb all of the imaginative parallel universe detail and subtle (and not so subtle) metaphors for our society and politics. I wasn't sure what to expect with this title as it's my first foray away from Thursday Next or Jack Spratt books - which I adore. From page 1 though, the richness and colour of his writing had me hooked and caring about what happened. Every Ffordde book is a tapestry of wit, insight, imagination and completely bonkers, yet relatable, plots and characters. Love, love, love his work and will be re-reading this for sure!

I've been a fan of Jasper Fforde for close to 20 years, but I really struggled with this one. While well written and with a sprinkling of amusing lines,I found the racism and pure spite directed at the'different' very hard to read. Maybe reading it during lockdown wasn't a wise move on my part, but I find Man's inhumanity to Man..and rabbits... hard to take.
