The Deal of a Lifetime is a novella by Swedish author and blogger, Fredrik Backman. A forty-five-year-old father writes his twenty-year-old son a letter on Christmas Eve. In it, this ruthless businessman ponders the value of one life over another, and details how poor a job of fathering he has done. Now, he is dying of terminal cancer; or maybe he’s dying in a traffic accident; that isn’t entirely clear. He’s not the only one facing death: the owner of a toy rabbit called Babbit, a sweet five-year-old girl, has cancer too. Backman’s Grim Reaper is a woman in a grey sweater with a folder. The father sees the opportunity to make the deal of a lifetime, but there’s a catch. A moving tale that’s bound to leave a lump in the throat.
