The Girl Who Became a Goddess is more than just a book of fables, it is a tribute to the childhood stories of someone who has experienced multiple cultures and learned to love them all.

These are tales passed on from generation to generation, some to delight, some to terrify, all to enlighten. As a girl, a mother, and a teacher, Theresa Fuller retells her favorite folk stories through the lens of her own life experiences in Singapore, Malaysia and Australia, putting a unique spin on ageless classics.

A foolish animal discovers that the Rain forest is a dangerous place

A ghostly boogeyman haunts a fishing village.

A beautiful princess learns that words have power.

A young boy is willing to sacrifice everything for his family.

A woman must decide between the man she loves and the human race.

The Girl Who Became a Goddess is more than a collection of stories, it is a glimpse into childhood memories and a love letter to a young girl from the adult she has become.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book, and finished it in one sitting, I couldn’t put it down! The way the author has written down the stories, really captured my interest and I found myself becoming fully immersed in the stories.

The stories were thrilling, sometimes ending with such a shock I wasn’t sure whether to be terrified or exhilarated at the conclusion! Some stories made me smile, and others feel sadness. Overall, each story was unique and entertaining.

The Girl Who Became a Goddess is a book on folktales and stories from the author’s perspective and memory of stories she was told, when she was a child. Reading these Malay, Singaporean and Chinese folktales, gives the reader a good insight into the life and culture of people living in these areas. This is why I would highly recommend this novel to anyone who wishes to know more about these cultures, or to anyone who just wants a good book to read!
