They say that the Thorn of Camorr can beat anyone in a fight. They say he steals from the rich and gives to the poor. They say he's part man, part myth and mostly street-corner rumour. And they are wrong on every count.

Only averagely tall, slender and god-awful with a sword, Locke Lamora is the fabled Thorn and the greatest weapons at his disposal are his wit and cunning. He steals from the rich - they're the only ones worth stealing from but the poor can go steal for themselves. What Locke cons, wheedles and tricks into his possession is strictly for him and his band of fellow con-artists and thieves: the Gentleman Bastards. Together their domain is the city of Camorr. Built of Elderglass by a race no-one remembers, its a city of shifting revels, filthy canals, baroque palaces and crowded cemeteries. Home to Dons, merchants, soldiers, beggars, cripples and feral children. And to Capa Barsavi, the criminal mastermind who runs the city.

I brought this book as part of a 3-piece book set (Lies, Red Seas and Republic) and for the first title in the series this is a solid 10/10 for me. The characters, world, story and writing is just such a joy. Highly recommended.

A brilliant story! Exceptionally well written, with just enough unexpected plot twisting to keep you guessing. The characters are lively and engaging, and the world is exciting and original. It was an excellent mix of fantasy and heist story, with a bit of revenge and intrigue along the way. Over all, a fantastic book I would recommend to anyone.

Takes a while to get going, but once it does this is a great story. The main characters are lovable rogues, the plot is as twisty-turny as you'd expect for a con-man tale. Great plans are made, and fall apart quickly, leaving our (anti-)heroes to improvise.
