'Who died?' I said. 'Or is it a secret?'
'My mother, Vianne Rocher.'

Seeking refuge and anonymity in the cobbled streets of Montmartre, Yanne and her two daughters live peacefully, if not happily, above their little chocolate shop.

Nothing unusual marks them out; no red sachets hang by the door. The wind has stopped - at least for a while.

Then into their lives blows Zozie de l'Alba, the lady with the lollipop shoes - ruthless, devious and seductive.

With everything she loves at stake, Yanne must face a difficult choice; to flee, as she has done so many times before, or to confront her most dangerous enemy...

Herself.

The Lollipop Shoes follows on from Chocolat. The story continues in Peaches for Monsieur le Cure and The Strawberry Thief.

Is the 2nd of the Chocolat Series. A really enjoyable read, but obviously, recommend reading the Series in sequence to fully appreciate The Strawberry Thief.

I was expecting a book that was based more on subterfuge and reality, rather than this flick of the finger "magic" stuff, and certainly the blurb on the back of the novel did not give any notice to the magic undertones that would drive the book.

So that being said, I was disgruntled that this wasn't what it appeared. Which, ironically, is the premise of the book in fact. Two women, both hiding secrets and attempting to gain lives that aren't theirs, both running from their past, and both attempting to achieve the anonymity that they desire for different reasons.

Rosette is a disappointment, she's "special", however little is said about what her talent is, or what it will become. I was hoping she'd be involved in the end, but she tapers off and acts more as fuel to Theirry's fire than anything else, which is a shame because she could have got away with more than that.

Anouk is what you'd expect from an 11 year old, sullen, immature and impulsive. She sees shiny bright new things and wants them, and thinks about (or perhaps doesn't, as she didn't show much remorse) the consequences later.

Zozie is hard to appreciate from the get go. We are aware of what her end game is, and she's so out in the open about it that you can't enjoy her, as she has little to redeem her in her quest.

I haven't read Chocolat, so perhaps this is a continuation of a theme well established, but it was dark and disappointing and I still would have preferred a frenemies stabbing each other in the back type book than this airy fairy stuff.
