In this "gripping tale for lovers of dystopian romance" (Kirkus Reviews), true feelings are forbidden, teen suicide is an epidemic, and the only solution is The Program.

Sloane knows better than to cry in front of anyone. With suicide now an international epidemic, one outburst could land her in The Program, the only proven course of treatment. Sloane's parents have already lost one child; Sloane knows they'll do anything to keep her alive. She also knows that everyone who's been through The Program returns as a blank slate. Because their depression is gone-but so are their memories.

Under constant surveillance at home and at school, Sloane puts on a brave face and keeps her feelings buried as deep as she can. The only person Sloane can be herself with is James. He's promised to keep them both safe and out of treatment, and Sloane knows their love is strong enough to withstand anything. But despite the promises they made to each other, it's getting harder to hide the truth. They are both growing weaker. Depression is setting in.

And The Program is coming for them.

This story is set in the future but touches on a topic that is relevant to teens today. The story is about a world where suicide is now an epidemic among teens. The Government has created the Program to "Cure" them. The Program uses medication to alter the brain to get rid of the depression. This includes forgetting the people who mean the most to you.

Sloane's brother committed suicide and now she and her boyfriend James, who is also her brothers best friend, have to look and act as happy and normal as possible to stay out of the Program.

James is eventually forcefully taken to the Program and Sloane is sent too. They are both sent to different facilities and she comes out of the Program with the memory of her brothers suicide and her boyfriend gone. The Program promises a new, happy and fresh start at life. Sloane, however, doesn't experience this and instead she is full of grief and fills and emptiness that she can't explain.

Suzanne Young has done and incredible job at writing a story on such a touchy subject. Through the story she shows us that instead of punishing or shoving medications at someone who struggles with mental illness we should be supporting and talking to them. Forcing "treatments" on people with a mental illness isn't going to work.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I can't wait to read the second instalment.
