Excerpt from The Works of Andrew Marvell, Esq.; Poetical, Controversial, and Political, Vol. 1 of 3: Containing Many Original Letters, Poems, and Tracts, Never Before Printed, With a New Life of the Author Being a native of Hull, where Mr. Marvell was horn, and hearing and reading very early of /o excellent a man, I was therehyi fiimulated to mahe this ojrer of my refpeft and veneration to his memory; not that it flood in need qf the afi/lance of my inferior ahilzties to perpetuate it hut onhr to flow my efleem of a perfon who had heen a general friend to manhind, a puhlicle one to his country, and a partial and firenuous one to the town of Hull. In this particular, I hope I have fo well fucceeded in the candid opinion of the generous world, hy drejing Mr. Marvell' s worhs in hetter clothes, though not in a newer fa/sion for I have given his words as they were written hy his own pen. The orthography of that period was rather over-charged with letters, as the pre/ent is dive/led of them; hut the former eynally conveys the fen/e, and ferves to ep'ahlz/h the period they were written in, as the tire/ms of pic'iures denote the forms and the manners of the age, as well as the ma/iers who painted them. There have heen many con tentions for the hirths of illu/irious, ancient clajich poets, and many cities have made their claims, though they had no pre.
