Philippa Pearce

Philippa Pearce and illustrator Helen Craig share two grandsons, Nat and Will, the sons of their children Sally and Ben. Philippa wrote A Finder's Magic for Helen to illustrate, and the name of the book's hero, "Tillawn" (Till), is an amalgam of the boys' names.

The peculiar relationship between the old and the very young is a constant theme in Philippa's writing and when, late in life, she had the "unexpected delight" of two small grandsons, it gave her a renewed burst of creative energy.

She called being a grandmother "a privilege, a rare, almost inexplicable pleasure - not just fun but something different, more." Philippa Pearce died in December 2006. The Philippa Pearce Memorial Lecture is held annually in September.

I first read this book from the local library in West Yorkshire UK in hard back with the first cover shown here. I was in Secondary School about 12 or 13yrs old. It would have been about mid to late 50s. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I later bought the paper backed edition in South Australia in early 70s where we'd emigrated to in March '67 with same picture on, for my daughter who was about 11yrs. She still has it and I even borrowed it back to read it again back in early 2000. I've got a DVD of the film made in UK, which is very good. It was also shown as a serial in the 70s on black and white TV, quite good. I can still watch it or read it again today in 2017 at age 71yrs just turned! My daughter is 49yrs now and still has the book in her collection from her younger days. An intriguing story, well thought out.
