Richelle Mead

Richelle Mead is an international bestselling author of over twenty-five books for both adults and teens. Her Georgina Kincaid and Dark Swan series take a witty but edgy look at the paranormal while her sci-fi Age of X series shows us a future with no religion.

Over on the young adult side, Richelle has written the much-acclaimed Vampire Academy series and its spin-off, Bloodlines, about a secret society keeping the vampire world hidden from humans. Her latest project, The Glittering Court, takes place in a fantasy world inspired by colonial America, following the adventures of three impoverished girls trained up to be "ladies" who can make advantageous marriages in a dangerous new world across the sea.

Richelle's books have been on the New York Times and USA Today bestseller lists and received honors from the American Library Association. Her books have been translated into over two dozen languages, as well as adapted into graphic novels. In 2014, Vampire Academy was made into a feature film. A lifelong reader, Richelle loves mythology and wacky humor. When not writing, she can be found spending time with her family, buying dresses, and watching bad reality TV.

When a fellow book lover suggested I read the Vampire Academy series I have to admit that I was hesitant. I have read some pretty downgrading vampire novels so was worried that I would waste my timing reading another 'stupid' supernatural romance story - boy was I wrong!

Vampire Academy had me gripped from the start to finish as I followed the tale of one young and 'badass' Dhampir - Rose and her troubles as she shows her extraordinary loyalty to her best friend, Lissa, and fights to do what she believes is right. With the amount of action going on it is very hard to put down - I grantee you'll feel the same! It truly is so much more than your regular 'vampire bites human' book.

Friendship, adventure, mystery, betrayal, romance and supernatural occurrences. Richelle Mead's compelling read draws you into the world of Vampire Academy from the start to finish. It truly is a must have for any bookworm. The perfect addition to your bookcase and the latest read that isn't to be missed, a truly great novel.

A quite enjoyable first book in this much-loved series. I read it recently so that I'd have some idea what was going on when I saw the film.

The story gets high-school-angst-woe-is-me-Twilight-ish at times, but I did think the tiers of vampire society were interesting. The characters were quite well-written, even if most of the girls seemed super-bitchy, including Rose herself at times. I really hope that as the books progress the girls mature and become nicer to each other because Im not sure I can do seven books of bitch!

This is your quintessential YA paranormal romantic adventure. If you're a fan of the genre, you'll love this.

Such a great start to a great series. Rose is such a fiery and fierce character, while Lissa is her polar opposite, calm and thoughtful and responsible. I love how the story starts with Rose and Lissa out in the real world to avoid the very real treat to Lissa and her yet to be uncovered powers.

The story flows very smoothly and I love the introduction of Dimitri when he pretty much hands Rose her backside and takes the two girls back to St Vladamir's Academy.

The book is a lot less romance orientated than Twilight and it;s great to see such a strong female lead in this book, although there are many strong females in the VA series which I also love. Don't get me wrong, the steamy scenes with Rose and Dimitri are fun and fit with the story, but it's not overly sappy.

Overall I loved everything about this first book, right down to grumpy Christian Ozera. I couldn't wait to jump right into Frostbite when I had finished Vampire Academy.

This is the story of Rose, who is half human and half Mori (vampire). She and her best friend, Lissa, who happens to be a Moroi, which in normal talk is a living vampire, meaning they can die and have specific abilities, are on the run and have been for the past two years.

That soon stops and they are discovered by a guardian, a hot one nonetheless who then takes them back to the academy where they'll have to stay until the end of their education.

The girls, soon find themselves in some different situations of their own. Romantic and action-wise. There was a reason why they were on the run, and that very reason soon comes back to bite them to show that while you can run, you can't hide, and everything always comes out sooner or later.

Rose's life soon becomes complicated when she finds herself attracted to someone she should not be interested in for many reasons, but sometimes the heart does not listen to what your brain is telling you.

I really liked Rose as a protagonist. She is strong, independent. She can also get scared and vulnerable just like anyone. She doesn't want to rely on anyone, as she feels she has to do everything herself, I think it's because she hasn't had the usual upbringing, and didn't have that normal family type childhood it's probably hard for her to trust many people.

Lissa on the other hand. She has changed over the last few years with the death of her family. That would change anyone, it has made her more fearful and scared of things.

Until someone comes into her life that makes her feel alive again, to show her that it's okay to live and not focus on what could be, or what was.

A great first installment to a great series.

It took me a long time to read Vampire Academy. My Twilight ravaged heart was looking for something new and fresh to fill the void and my friends suggested it. So, I took a trip to my local Library and searched for it. I couldnt find it on the shelves, so I hit it up on the computer. It had 23 reserves. Yeah, I wasnt going to read it anytime soon. So, I put my hopes of reading Vampire Academy on hold, until one glorious Saturday morning. Wreathed in a halo of sunlight like some God-sent gift, was the book. Vampire Academy. The anticipation to read this novel was crazy! I didnt read this book, no, I devoured it. Front-to-back, back-to-front, I lived and breathed this book until all I wanted in life was my own personal Dimitri Belikov! Its no secret that I LOVE this series and Richelle Mead. Honestly, I might as well build a shrine to her, seeing as I read her books RELIGIOUSLY! Words cant explain how glad I am for the Saturday morning I first saw the book!

Love and loyalty runs deeper than blood.

There are three types of vampires in the Vampire Academy world. Firstly, the Moroi, who are the ruling and good mortal vampires that all specialize in the control of a specific element (earth, water, air, fire or spirit). The Moroi live in a hierarchical society based on royalty and class, and they are currently being governed by a Queen. Also, sunlight isnt much of an issue to them. Its uncomfortable, but they wont be spontaneously combusting anytime soon! Next, you have the Dhamphir. These are the offspring of Moroi and humans or other dhamphirs. The Dhamphir basically serve as the guardians of the Moroi and train in how to protect them. Lastly, the Strigoi. These are the vampires nightmares are made of. They are evil, undead and unlike the Moroi, cant go into sunlight whatsoever. A Moroi turns into a Strigoi if they kill someone by feeding off their blood.

So, seventeen-year-old Rose is the guardian of her best friend Lissa, who happens to be a Moroi Princess. After a car accident that killed Lissas family, her and Rose became bonded in a very special way. Rose gained the ability of being able to be in Lissas head. After finding out they were in danger from some unknown force, the girls ran away from St. Vladmirs Academy. The story starts off with the girls being hauled back to the academy, by a group of guardians. After careful deliberation, its decided that the girls arent expelled and Rose will have to train with Guardian Dimitri Belikov, in order to catch up with her dhampir classmates. And so ensues the drama and chaos that comes with being a teenage girl in high school, while trying to figure out the mystery behind who wants to hurt her and her best friend.

Only a true best friend can protect you from your immortal enemies.

Rose is the protagonist of the story, and trust me when I say never in my life have I ever read about such a sassy and badass heroine like her! Rose is a 57, dark-haired and curvy beauty. Shes wild, impulsive and very stubborn. Most authority figures dont really rank that high on her list of people to respect, and she often back-mouths her teachers. She isnt afraid to say whats on her mind and that, plus her sarcasm and smartass comments, gets her into a lot of trouble. She likes to flirt, party, drink and spends a considerable amount of time in detention, but that is not all. Rose is determined. Shes determined to prove to herself and the others that just because she missed out on two years, doesnt mean she cant be ten times better than the other novice guardians. Being weak isnt an option and so she trains relentlessly with her mentor Dimitri. Rose is also fiercely loyal and devoted to her friends. She would do anything for Lissa and Lissa would do anything for her.

I'm really not good with impulse control.

Rose is everything Bella and Clary arent. She makes mistakes (a lot), bad judgments, shes strong, brave, cowardly, emotional, smart, complex, heroic, unheroic. There are just so many facets to her personality that make her such an interesting character to read about. Theres never a dull moment with Rose! Seriously, some of the things she said had me laughing for days. And this wasnt just your typical, run of the mill type laughing. It was more like the laughing-so-hard-I-almost-pee-myself type laughing! Her relationship with Dimitri is one of my favourites (obviously) in the book and I honestly the anticipation to read their interactions with each other kept me reading this book until the wee hours of the morning! Shes in love with himlike majorly! But who could blame her? Dimitri is UH-MAZING!

Dimitri Belikov. *swoon* All you have to do is say his name and I turn into an incoherent, drooling hormonal mess! Dimitri is a 24 year old Guardian who trains with Rose before and after school, in order to help her catch up. Hes Russian, a total badass, super hot, Russian, a lover of Western novels, buff, oh, and did I mention hes RUSSAIN?!? Seriously, my heart will forever belong to this 6 foot 7 inches hunk of Russian perfection. I mean, how many YA novels do you read where the hot guy is Russian? But in all honesty, I loved Dimitri (and not because hes Russian, but that helped!). Hes very mysterious and there is a lot to him we dont know (but we find out as the series progresses). Hes very respectful and diligent. Hes one of the best at what he does. We definitely get glimpses of the inner turmoil raging inside him to do what is right, or follow his heart instead. It was very interesting reading about a teacher who has been placed in such a precarious position with such a vivacious character like Rose. The attraction definitely goes both ways!

The only thing better than imagining Dimitri carrying me in his arms was imagining him shirtless while carrying me in his arms.

The things I loved about this novel.

1.The charactersEach of the main characters served a purpose to the novel and the story. Vampire Academy honestly had some of my favorite characters that Ive ever read about in a YA novel.

2.The VA worldRichelle Mead has written a series that is absolutely REFRESHING! A totally different take on your average vamp-tale. Not only that, but it was also a refreshing take on a YA novel. The only other series Ive read where the setting is predominantly at a school would be Harry Potter, and that was almost five years ago!

3.The serious stuffYou might think that just because its about two teenage girls who gossip and talk about boys, that this novel is some clich high school Mean Girls knockoff, but it isnt. This book has some bite (pun totally intended). Death, torture, cutting, the girls experience it all. What I really appreciated was the fact that these issues werent taken lightly, especially with Lissas cutting. This is an issue that hasnt come up in many YA novels Ive read and Im glad it was done without any sense of flippancy or insincerity.

4.No love triangleIf theres one thing Ive gotten tired of, its indecisive girls who cant seem to make up their minds between two guys *cough* Katniss *cough*

5.RelationshipsAnd no Im not just talking about the romantic ones. Despite all the crushes and boys, Rose and Lissas relationship trumps them all! Never have I read about two female characters so devoted to each other and bonded by such a strong sense of love and friendship! Theyre more than just best friends, theyre sisters!

6.The way it flowedHonestly, Ive never been so satisfied with a book from the very first chapter, all the way to the end. It was engaging and seeing things from Roses perspective kept me more than entertained!

7.No sparkles.

This book(series) will forever be one of my absolute favourites! Its full of constant drama, action, suspense, comedy, and of course, romance. Its not just a story about a school full of teenage vampires, but a story about how important and incredible it is to have someone in your life that you can be your absolute self around. Someone, who at the end of the day, will still love you despite your flaws. Its a story of how strong the bonds of friendship can run and how unbreakable they can be. Vampire Academy might not be for everyone, but I urge you to try it. It really is an exquisite piece of writing that captures the hearts of high school teens with such intensity and veracity. At eleven years old, I waited for my Hogwarts Acceptance letter, and now at sixteen, I await being hauled off to St. Vladimirs by a hot Russian Guardian!

Vampire academy by Richelle Mead is a captivating book for any young adult to read, every turned page draws you in more. In a world full of Dhampir, Moroi and the Strigoi, Rose Hathaway a badass Dhampir is bound to best friend Lissa Dragomir who is Moroi after a tragic accident. Once life was normal now the girls dont know who to trust as dark secrets slowly surface and the dangers of Strigoi become all too real. On top of that the heated relationship between student and teacher, Rose and Dimitri Belikov makes your heart race and palms sweat. I love Richelle Mead and enjoy this book as thoroughly as any of her others.

The book "Vampire Academy" is an amazing start to a completely capturing, page turning series written by Richelle Mead. A great, non-cliched vampire storyline combines with interesting character persona's for an excellent read. Without a doubt, you will find at least one character in this book that you are able to entirely relate to - although quirky, fun and interesting, they are presented in such a way that enables this. I would highly recommend this book to any young adult, and even older readers, as it (and the series following it) has earned a position amongst my favourite novels. A word of warning however, you will not be able to put them down!

Upon seeing the title of Vampire Academy many years ago when I worked in a book store, I was a bit daunted to read it as I thought it would be another Twilight love story - boy was I wrong! I was immediately hooked into the series having finished book one within a day and a half. The characters are appealing, the story line gripping and you just wish you were a part of their world.

Their world is comprised of three Vampyric races; Dhampirs, Moroir and Strigoi.

The Dhampirs are guardians to the Moroi, raised to be essentially bodyguards to Moroi royalty with their duty to protect them above anyone else their number one goal - here you meet Rose Hathaway (Dhampir) whose best friend happens to be Lissa Dragomir (Moroi), the last Dragomir princess in a long successful bloodline. Since they were kids Rose and Lissa became instant best friends and one day they formed a bond that allowed Rose to know what Lissa was thinking, seeing, doing.

Moroi are what can only be classified as 'good' vampires, sure they feed off of human blood to survive but don't kill their food source - if they do, that is how a Strigoi is created from one of two ways, the other being turned by force.

Be sure to give this book a chance and I am sure you will become enthralled by the world of St Vladimirs as much as I have been (Have finished re-reading the series for a seventh time and have begun their spin-off novels now) It is my go-to book when I have finished anything new I have recieved, I never get sick of the different personalities portrayed in these novels. They kick ass and make you love them too!

Before I commence talk on the first book Id like to comment on the series as a whole: these books are really readable and enjoyable (and emotional), but really quite fun. They are less frivolous than many of the other YA novels Ive read, and the series (as well as the characters) get quite a bit darker as the story progresses. The characters face innumerable challenges; mental instability, torture, murder, betrayal, death, and of course love. The main protagonist, Rose, is especially strong; she is quick-tempered, but clever with a great sense of humour (and an even greater sense of duty and loyalty), she is tough and she develops a great depth and sadness that you dont see much of in the first book. Best of all she is unlike many other female protagonists from YA books in general, Rose is confident.

The writing style is blessedly free of awkward construction and mistakes. In fact, the writing isn't too bad at all. I like the way it is written as if it were average thoughts, and not phrased in elaborate soliloquies that hurt the brain and are nothing like actual peoples real-life inner monologues. Rose is real and speaks her mind, but she needs the help Dimitri and Lissa sometime to keep her from getting ahead of herself.

Now for the first book itself:

What really made me like this book was the fact that Richelle Mead didnt gloss over the parts of the story that were uncomfortable and deep and sometimes even ugly. She addressed these issue and didnt dress them up and make them look pretty.

Their World:
Richelle Mead created an intriguing world using REAL Romanian Vampire Mythologies (NO ADDED SPARKLES) about 2 races of vampires one bad- the Strigoi and one good- the Moroi and the human hybrids- the Dhampirs who are supposed to protect the Moroi from the Strigoi. The variety of races really did intrigue me because it created a whole new world that YA usually never has, the academy itself, the Moroi politics and monarchy system, another plus is the elemental magic that the Moroi possess and the mysterious 5th element Spirit.

Roses Addiction:
She got the addiction right (Roses addiction to being bitten and the high it induces), the way it makes Rose feel, and the clear comparison to a drug. She also wrote about Rose not wanting to admit her addiction, not just to others but to herself, and the shame she feels because of it, the self-loathing that comes with feeling good about doing something bad. But is it so bad? I like that was left ambiguous.

Lissas Cutting:
I love Richelle for that (This may make me seem sadistic, but let me finish). This made sense of the cutting and why Lissa did it. It didn't dismiss it, didn't shy away from it, and didn't make it pathetic. It makes readers understand cutting in an honest and real way.

Hypocrisy:
I much as I hate (and love) to admit it Rose and Lissa used the same tactics of gossip and shaming (both slut-shaming and shaming around status & class) on the people who used it against them. Richelle didn't leave that out. She didn't excuse it, she showed how Rose and Lissa were sometimes just as bad as the lesser villains in the book and didn't justify how low Lissa and Rose went in trying to defend themselves, how they became almost as terrible as the people who were tormenting them. That was hard for us to read, and it was important for us to read too. It showed that her characters werent perfect, it made them real.

The central Relationship:
But the most important thing Richelle got right was the central relationship. It wasnt about Rose and Dimitri, it was about the friendship between two best friends. It was about Rose and Lissa, everything else was secondary (Even Romitri, although more focus does shift to that as love grows throughout the series). That's the point of this whole story- sisterhood! That feels corny to write but whatever. It's true, this story is moving because it is about how girls can bond and protect each other and hurt together and move forward together. How they can understand each other.

The Romance:
The romantic relationship is also great. Rose becomes involved with another Dhampir, Dimitri, as I mentioned earlier, but their relationship is complicated also-forbidden actually (oh come on as if youve never read a book that didnt have at least 1 clich), because they are both set to be Lissa's Guardians when Lissa and Rose graduate (and then there is age, which isnt too bad, but then there is also their teacher-student relationship which is a little bad and Dimitri could lose his job even though he isnt actually a teacher there). Their chemistry is so thick and vibrant, you can actually feel it when you read. Heck, Dimitri's character itself has enough chemistry to visibly spark from the pages, but he isnt perfect either (you learn this later on in the series however, bummer).

Overall, this story had me hooked and the series only got better as I read, Roses character grew and flourished, she developed depth and sadness and she also lost some of the pettiness that slightly tainted her character in the first/second book. Lissa became a stronger character and stood out from the crowd standing up for her own beliefs and becoming a leader. Her relationship with Christian weakened only to be reignited in the wake of battle and disaster. Dimitris character develops so much from the seemingly perfect god of the first book, it is revealed why Dimitri is so into Rose, He supports her through the loss of someone she cares about (something he knows all too well), Dimitri succumbs to tragedy, and comes out of it with the sadness of a tortured man. And of course the plot thickens and becomes more intense as lies are told, people are killed, and the ultimate villain is someone we never expected. This series is by far one of my favourites, and I cannot wait to see it come to life on screen.

Vampire Academy is not just your normal vampire book. In fact, it's also not your normal teen book. In this book, the amazing mythological world is revealed through three main vampire races; the Dhampir, Moroi and the Strigoi.

Dhampirs are half-human, half-vampires with enhanced physical abilities who spend their life training at 'Vampire Academy,' otherwise known as St. Vladimir's Academy to learn how to defend the Moroi, (Vampires who wield magic like Fire, Water, Air and Earth and has a sensitivity to the sun) against the bad guys, the Strigoi who can only come out at night. They are the epitome of evil with super speed and strength and can only be killed with a silver stake.

Rose Hathaway is our main protagonist, a Dhampir who is brave, loyal, sarcastic and usually reckless. She is training to be a Guardian, to protect her sweet and gentle Moroi best friend, Lissa Dragomir from the Strigoi.

The book starts off with the two girls who had been on the run for two years because of the mysterious warnings and threats to Lissa's safety at the Academy. Finally caught, they are hauled back to St. Vladimir's where they get to experience high school all over again, to a whole new level. Food fights? Think again. More like magic fights or kicking each other's ass during Dhampir training.

This book is extremely well written and the world Richelle Mead has created pulls you right in. Don't get it wrong, the book is not just centered on high school but deals with various problems. It is action packed throughout the whole book and will keep you guessing as new revelations are revealed.

Perhaps the bestand most refreshing thing about this book is the friendship between Rose and Lissa. They are opposites in every way, but compliment each other so well in personality which balances it out. They are completely loyal to each other and if nothing else, this book focuses on their friendship more than their love interests and showcases the lengths one would go for their best friend.

I highly recommend this series to everyone. Let go of your prejudicesif you have any, and give it a go! Did I mention the sexy love interests for Rose and Lissa? Swoon at protective Guardian Dimitri Belikov and broody fire magic user, Christian Ozera.

This book opened me up to a much better idea of what Vampire Fiction can be. I read this just after reading Twilight a few years ago and this really got me hooked on the genre. I based me Elective History Major Work on Moroi Lore and I only have Richelle Mead to thank for that.

It is such an amazing book with a very real main character who boasts a lot of characteristics that we find in ourselves to be unattractive, and yet we love her because she is Rose Hathaway. Her love for Dimitri is such a great underline for what could have otherwise been a whiny teenage novel. I feel that the story deals with a lot of complex ideas and themes and would recommend to people above the age of 12.

As is with most other VA fans, I couldnt put this book down. As soon as I finished it, I devoured the next 2 books, but then had the painful (but not too long) wait until Blood Promise came out. As soon as I would finish one book my sister would be in there reading it, the poor things didnt get a break!

VA centers on best friends: Rose Hathaway and Lissa Dragomir. It follows the girls through the typical hardships of high school life as well as what its like to go through something that you dont understand and therefore fear. There is mystery, drama, action and romance, as well as suspense.

Rose is a Dhampir, half-human, half-vampire bodyguard who has sworn her life to protect the most important person in her life, Lissa. Lissa is a Moroi, mortal and good vampires who can wield 1 of 4 elements; earth, air, fire, and water. But Lissa is special, Rose knows this. Rose also knows that Lissa is in serious danger, but from who?

Rose is loyal, strong, brave, reckless, determined and intense. Lissa is sweet and gentle. Even when the odds are stacked too high against them, Rose will defend Lissa to the end, be it from crazy classmates or the evil, undead Strigoi.

It is really refreshing to read a YA novel that is not fuelled mainly by love triangles. Naturally, there are blossoming relationships in the book as this is the basis for all YA novels, but in Vampire Academy the main relationship is a story of best friends and the issues they face in their obscure lives.

I absolutely loved this series!!!

I was surprised at how much I liked this book. Richelle Mead's world building and descriptions were fantastic - I had a clear image of all the character's in my head - and when we move into a new setting, I had a sense of what the surroundings looked like. I felt like the pacing could have been improved, especially in the first half of the book (it got a bit slow at times), however overall it was done quite nicely and I really enjoyed it.

I did have a slight issue with one aspect of the story. We have the three types of vampires - the Moroi, Dhampir and Strigoi. Essentially, the Moroi are the good vampires, the Dhampirs are the guardians - protecting the Moroi, and the Strigoi are the bad vampires. When a Moroi takes a life they turn into a Strigoi, or they can be turned by a Strigoi - but we never find out why killing someone else turns them Strigoi. Is there magic involved? I don't know if this is talked about in the next books, but I feel as if it would have been good to know in order to enjoy the story even more.

Rose and Lissa, I enjoyed both of these characters (particularly Rose) and their friendship, however they both had moments where they annoyed me. Rose was always going on about how all the Moroi wanted to look like her and how she was the only one who would look good in a certain dress etc. and sounded slightly conceited at times. I thought it was unnecessary for Lissa to compel all those people for her and Rose and it made her look a bit crazy at times. I really liked both Dmitri and Christian and I don't really have anything negative to say about them. I would have liked a little bit more of Dmitri's story so we can understand him better.

Overall Vampire Academy was a really good book that I loved reading and I cannot wait to read the next books, especially since everyone says that the next books in the series are even better than the first one.

It took me a while to pick up this book after the constant urging of my 17 year old daughter who had read the book at 12. I wasn't disappointed. The characters had depth, the scenery had atmosphere, and the plot was intriguing, and the vampire sect was different to what I have been exposed to so far.

The protagonist, Rose is inspiring for her mental strength and her bond to Lissa, and her attraction to Dimitri is entertaining.

I was attracted to the sarcasm of Christian and his character development throughout the novel.

Richelle Mead's writing is very intriguing and captures you into the story.

Well worth the read.

If you like seeing chicks kick butt, make questionable choices, learn from their mistakes, and defend one another to the very end, then Vampire Academy is for you. Meet Rose Hathaway, a sassy Dhampir (half-vampire half-human) who would do anything to protect her best friend Lissa Dragomir, a Moroi princess and the last of her line.

The Moroi are living vampires. They live off blood but do not kill, have a sensitivity to sunlight but dont burst into flame (nor do they sparkle) and they arent exceptionally strong. The Dhampirs, however, have enhanced physical abilities that make them the perfect bodyguards. Their lifes purpose is to become guardians and protect the Moroi, and the rest of the world, from Strigoi, their natural enemies. These creatures are the vampires from nightmares; they are merciless, they kill and are super strong.

After running away from St Vladimirs, a boarding school for Moroi and Dhampirs, the two girls are unwillingly hauled back by a team of Dhampir guardians led by Dimitri Belakov, one of the greatest guardians of their time. A guardian who Rose feels an instant attraction to.

High school for vampires is not dissimilar to that of humans; teenage hormones, cliques, gossip, parties, and endless drama. However, these guys are vamps so it's not surprising that drama evolves into life or death situations.

A great start to a series that doesnt have your typical Mary Sue protagonist. Rose can be frustratingly bull-headed, arrogant, and judgemental but she is also loyal, courageous, and passionate. Shes tough but vulnerable, heroic but needs saving from time to time. And with the sexy love interests of Dimitri Belakov and Christian Ozario, Vampire Academy kept me up until the wee hours of the morning as I could not put it down.

Read this book: if you like strong female characters, intense romances, and fast-paced action. Yes the genre seems to be flooded with similar books at the moment but this ones sets itself apart and well above the others.

I read the vampire academy series a long time ago when it first came out, when I heard they were making a movie about them I decided to go back and refresh my memory. I had no idea how much I was going to fall in love with the series! It has such a great storyline that isn't generic to all vampires and has its own twist that makes them interesting. Rose is such a strong independent and hilarious character that you can't help but fall in love with her. Rachelle Mead is also wonderful at writing and it makes it so easy to follow the story and get sucked right in. Definitely a must read and not just for young people.

I cannot explain how much I love this book and in saying that the whole series. It's just amazing. There are so many different elements ranging from supernatural to magic.

Rose is the perfect protagonist. She is feisty, strong and says what she believes even though most of the time it gets her into trouble. She has this fort up that only Dimitri can bring down. I love Rose because she is not some pathetic female main character. She is not physically strong, but mentally. We do see her vulnerable side and I love it.

I love Dimitri, these is no doubt about it hes like, as they say, a god. He is amazing and he doesn't take shit from Rose which falls for a pretty funny outcome. We see him to a sort break down a little, but, like Rose says, he puts his guardian marks back on.

The concept of the whole world that Richelle Mead created is a little confusing at first, with the names not only of the vampires hard to pronounce, but the characters as well. The way that everything works in the world from the Royal Vampires to the magic that the Moroi possess, is not only awesome, but intriguing.

Lissa, hmm, I really liked her for most of Vampire Academy, but sometimes I just wanted to smack her across the head and yell get your head in the game. She, again is a strong female character with a bad past and holds something that she cannot control.

Christian, Mason, Eddie, I love them all.

I love the fact that Vampire Academy is set in a school because it shows how mean teens can be towards each other.

Vampire Academy is such an amazing read. It takes you on a journey and you feel all the emotions of the characters. The action is pretty epic, especially the last few scenes of the book. The romance is forbidden on both accounts in some sort of way and gives the novel so much more depth. Rose is an amazing character to get inside and, in saying that, Lissa is as well.

You are taken on their journey and once you are on it you dont want to leave.

Richelle Mead is a talented author and her writing captivates the audience and forces them to read more. You cannot put the books down - you just have to keep on. And you know what I love that.

Dont be put off with the fact that it is called Vampire Academy because that is just a name dont judge it by that.

A few years ago, I picked up vampire academy expecting another generic vampire novel. However I was pleasantly surprised to find that it differs from most of the other books in it's genre.

This book captures your imagination, and is a great way to start the vampire academy series. While I never usually read a book more than once or twice, this book (and the rest of the series) has been read many times and I love it everytime!

Highly recommend this book :)

Hey guys I began reading this book in yr 9! It's definitely a great read especially if you are into vampire books or teenage romance. I have to say Richelle Mead writes magnificenly and since this book I've completed the entire series! It's that good!

Couldn't put it down until the end. Characters are easy to relate to and the story line is like no other vampire novel around.

I was first given this book by a teacher of mine, who noticed I liked Vampires. I wasn't much of a reader then, just when I needed too. I now read most of the day, from morning to night. I own all six books to the 'Vampire Academy' series, as well as the first three graphic novels, the spin-off series 'Bloodlines', the Ultimate Guide and thee movie companion. I also loved the movie.

Vampire Academy is the first book to an action pack series. It follows the relationship of two young girls (Rose and Lissa), and their struggle to stay alive. While throwing in action, romance and drama to keep people of all ages and gender interested. It also contains Vampires that don't sparkle ;)

I have recommended this book to alot of my friends and even had five pick up the book, and love the series. Once you pick up this book, you can't put it down until you've finished.

This book is awesome, and a must read. I would encourage anyone to read it. :) Happy reading Guys!

For someone that used to hate reading, I now read at least at least 2 books every week. This is because Vampire Academy got me hooked on reading, it is that good!

It starts off right in the middle, and action is just a page away, at the end I just couldn't wait for the next book, no, literally I went and bought it the next day. The story line is just so intense and captures and draws you in straight away. I have lost count of how many times I've recommended this book. As I got to know her, Rose became everything I wanted to be; dangerous yet loyal and committed, she's strong, determined and survives in a world trying to bring her down. She is my hero and inspiration.

I have read this book over and over and never get bored of it, every time I open that cover , its as if I'm reading it for the first time. This is just one of those books that will never get old. It is by far my favourite and always will be.

YOU HAVE TO READ IT!!

Vampire Academy is one of the best books I've ever read. It sucks you up and leaves you wanting more. I've lost count of how many people I've suggested this book to and how many have loved.

Richelle Mead creates a world that no one has ever touched, with characters like Rose and Lissa who are completely different from your every day teenagers. I've been reading the books since I was 11 and I can still read them today without being completely bored with it.

A book I'd recommend to anyone from vampire lovers and vampire haters.

This is exactly the kind of vampire book I enjoy reading about where sometimes aren't nice and sparkle in the sun.

Rose is one of the most kickass protagonists I've ever read.Shes the most loyal friend, she got an amazing sense of humor and shes strong and determined to do her best to protect her best friend Lissa.

I love the plot in this book, its not a complicated one and its easy to get swept up in all the action and drama that being back at St. Vladimirs means for Rose and Lissa.

Overall it was a great book that I actually got through in one sitting because I didnt want to stop reading.

This is a drama filled series that is impossible to put down. These dynamic characters full of sass and attitude make you want to be their friends.

Rose Hathaway is a Dampier (half human, half vampire) whose duty is to protect her best friend Lissa Dragomir who is a Moroi (good vampire) of royal descent, from the Strigoi (evil/savage vampires who create destruction). Rose is a teenage girl who isn't afraid to get her hands dirty and kick butt.

Richelle Mead has created an engrossing novel that leads into an extraordinary series that always leaves you wanting more.

A novel and series that I would read over and over again.

This is the first book I've ever sat down, opened up and never been able to close it again. It is also the book that made me the crazy bookworm I am today!

Richelle Mead is an absolute genius and doesn't hold back with this incredibly creative depiction of the 'vampire' genre. I've never quite read, or seen any thing like it. Looking at the title I expected some sort of 'twilight' copy cat (take note I'm not a fan of twilight) but after reading the first chapter I realized it was much, much more.

What I also loved with the book was that none of the main characters are perfect. They all have there own faults and issues that make them even more relatable to the people reading it. The protagonists, especially Rose, and so 'human' (excuse the irony) that it seems unrealistic for them to be in such a crazy Good-Vampire Bad-Vampire world.

This in itself is what makes the book so hard to put down. So many twists and turns that I didn't expect and at times I felt as if I was Rose and questioned what I would do if I was put in the situations she was in.

I actually received this book as a Christmas present! Best Christmas present ever! Had I have not gotten this as a present I may not have ever read the books. I recommend anyone trying to get into reading to pick up this book and give it a go!

Plus it's the first installment in a six part series which means more fun and drama with loved characters to come!

Thank-you Richelle Mead!

I have read all of Richelle Mead's YA novels to date and though they keep getting better and better this was the first book of hers I read and as such it will always remain my favourite.

This is a new take on vampires and from page 1 I was immersed in the story and fell in love with the characters. I find it hard to distinguish the books in the series not because they're all convoluted and confusing, but because the whole series is just so wonderful that I can't think of one book without imagining the whole story. I would definitely recommend this series to anyone, young or old, as long as you like YA, you should give this book a try!

If you like paranormal and vampires then this book is a must read as is the spin-off Bloodlines series - they're both fantastic reads and I highly recommend them both. I loved the characters, the story, and the romance, in fact I loved it all!
