The authors describe, in non-technical language, the application of behavioural psychology to the teaching, care and development of adults with learning disabilities. It is the first text which provides both a theoretical background and well described examples for practical, hands-on work specifically with adults. It is written for people in both local authority settings and in the private and voluntary sector; those in adult education whose training would not include the principles of learning theory; and for the parents and families of adults with learning disabilities. Part 1 of the book is concerned with the principles of learning theory and the theoretical background to teaching skills and managing problem behaviours. Throughout this section numerous examples are given of the application of the principles to everyday work with adults with learning disabilities. Part 2 is divided into specific areas of skills such as self-help skills, the skills needed for independent living and going to work and social skills and self control. This section ends with a chapter on how to help people with particular problem behaviours and one on maintaining progress.
Examples in each area are given of how teaching has been and might be approached in individual instances. Most chapters end with questions that can be used to help readers revise what they have read or to act as the basis for discussion. The appendices include possible answers to the questions, and lists of useful resources and references.
