His parents are Josef Fassbender, German, and Adele Fassbender, Irish.

According to the Fassbender’s family tree on his mother’s side the actor is a scion of Michael Collins, one of the Irish politicians who had a key role in the deployment of guerrilla warfare against the British Empire.

In 1979 after their moving to Killarney, his father opened the restaurant West End House and was working as a chef.
