They know immediately that it is special. But it is much more than just a map. It is the start of a quest to find a grail, a source of great power that could contain - or resurrect - the powerful, age-old forces of evil in the world. It's difficult to review this book without reference to the overarching series. The Dark is Rising is an award-winning fantasy series, depicting the struggle between the Light and Dark. Over the course of five books, Will Stanton and the three Drew children fight the Dark, an ancient evil returning to the world.

In Over Sea, Under Stone, the Drew children, Simon, Jane, and Barnabas, are introduced on a holiday to Cornwall. Their irrepressible curiosity leads them on a quest a mystical artifact and into conflict with the Dark.

Over Sea, Under Stone is primarily an adventure book, a Da Vinci Code for children, albeit one that leads into a deep and mystical world. It's a gateway book, a fantasy without the dangers of magic, but one that hints at the existence of a hidden world.

In the context of the series, it is crucial in setting of the world. It introduces the Drew children and the setting of Cornwall, both re-introduced in Greenwitch.
