The Arabian Nights' Entertainments (Also known as A Thousand and One Nights) is a collection of medieval Middle Eastern folklore tales about brave individuals such as Aladdin, Ali Baba and Sinbad, whose luck and wit lead them through a full-blown adventure. danger First compiled in the fifteenth century, the stories entered Western culture in the early eighteenth century when they were translated into French. The first English edition followed a century later. Since then, it has been translated and rewritten many times for both adults and children.

The translation is re-told of stories into moral tales or amplified in exotic and erotic aspects. Sir Richard Francis Burton challenged Great Britain's Pornography Dissemination Act of 1857 and the obscene definition laid down by Brad Lah v. Queen (1872) when he published the edition of The Arabian Nights. An undisclosed translation for private members in London in the mid-1880s.

In May 1927, an English translation made up of the French version of J. C. Mardus by E. Powys Mathers was imported to the United States and was seized as pornography by US Customs in New York. The permission to do so comes as part of the 1842 Tariff Act, which gives local customs authorities discretion, whose decisions are usually appealed to the U.S. Customs Court. The customs ruling is still under review by the Treasury Department. The arrest replaces state and local laws and typically means a loss of access to the entire U.S. market by importers. These vast powers are challenged by importers. The Treasury Department has issued a letter claiming that a previously undisclosed version has been imported and the new rules are under draft.
