The Three Cities is a novel cycle written by Emile Zola between 1893 and 1898. It directly follows the previous cycle of novelist Les Rougon-Macquart. His hero, Abbe Pierre Froment, the common thread to all three novels, Lourdes, Rome and Paris, where Zola asked about the place of religion in modern society, but also on the confrontation between a radiant face bourgeoisie a miserable working world.

Émile Zola

Emile Zola, born in 1840, was the founder of the Naturalist movement in French literature.

His novel Therese Raquin caused a scandal on publication and was followed by his brilliant Rougon-Macquart cycle (1871-1893), a series of twenty novels focussed on one family.

Zola died in mysterious circumstances in 1902, the victim of an accident or murder.
