"The Valiant Little Tailor" or "The Brave Little Tailor" is a German fairy tale collected by the Brothers Grimm, tale number 20. Joseph Jacobs collected another variant "A Dozen at One Blow" in "European Folk and Fairy Tales". Andrew Lang included it in "The Blue Fairy Book". Another of many versions of the tale appears in "A Book of Giants" by Ruth Manning-Sanders. In the Aarne-Thompson classification system of classifying folktales, it is type 1640. It also include episodes of type 1060, Squeezing Water from a Stone; type 1062, A Contest in Throwing Stones; type 1052, A Contest in Carrying a Tree; type 1051, Springing with a Bent Tree; and type 1115, Attempting to Kill the Hero in His Bed.


"Das tapfere Schneiderlein" ist ein Märchen (ATU 1640, 1051, 1052, 1060, 1062, 1115). Es steht in den Kinder- und Hausmärchen der Brüder Grimm ab der Erstauflage von 1812 an Stelle 20 (KHM 20). In der Erstauflage lautete der Titel "Von einem tapfern Schneider". Ludwig Bechstein übernahm es ebenfalls nach Montanus in sein Deutsches Märchenbuch als "Vom tapfern Schneiderlein" (1845 Nr. 2, 1853 Nr. 1).

Wilhelm Grimm

Wilhelm Grimm (1786-1859), German author and cultural researcher, was one half of the Grimm Brothers; authors of some of the most popular and best-known European fairy tales. He was born in the town of Hanau, in what was at the time the Holy Roman Empire. He was a graduate of the University of Marburg.

Jacob Grimm

Jacob Grimm (1785-1863), one half of of the renowned Brothers Grimm, was a German philologist, jurist, and mythologist. He was also a linguist, and discoverer of "Grimms law," and wrote several of the Wests best known fairy tales along with his brother Wilhelm. He was born in the town of Hanau, in what was at the time the Holy Roman Empire. He was a graduate of the University of Marburg.
