n Emily Brontë's only novel, Catherine Earnshaw and Heathcliffe, raised together after Cathy's wealthy father took Heathcliffe in as a boy, have an obsessive and dramatic love for one another. They know that they are soulmates, drawn together irresistably if not always happily. Despite this passion, their love is not meant to be--social customs dictate that Catherine must marry someone of her own station, and Heathcliffe is considered unworthy. Bound together by need and desire only fueled by the forces keeping them apart, their love is a torturous one, leading to explosive outbursts, bad behaviour, and endless games of shifting power.

Emily Brontë

Emily Bronte was born at Thornton, in Yorkshire, in 1818 and died in 1848. She was the younger sister of Charlotte Bronte and the fifth of six children.

Like her sister, Emily worked as a governess and later attended a private school in Brussels. Emily published poetry under a male pseudonym to avoid prejudice against female writers but Wuthering Heights was her only novel.
