Jan Magray is a music educator, interfaith minister, and grandmother of nine children under the age of twelve. Her love for children and commitment to meaningful experiences in the home, classroom, and community promoted the creation and production of the 'Ballad of the Black Drumfish'. She has served as artistic director for both public school and community children's choirs and has taught music at many educational levels. Jan has a B.S. in Education from the University of Minnesota, completed graduate musical training at the Kodaly Center of America, and hold an M.A. in pastoral ministry from Boston College. The Black Drumfish is a real fish. It lives in shallow waters and canals in coastal Florida. It really does make an audible 'moaning' sound. It is the only fish species in which the female responds by singing back to the male moan. Her response is a 'KA THUMP'which is how the fish first got the name Drumfish. The vocal performance on the CD is by Dorian Boyd, a young musician and sound engineer. His mellow voice is reminiscent of Burl Ives and extremely well suited to the story song which is set to compelling but totally clean hip hop accompaniment music.
