Tsiolkas should be a household name for local fiction by now. This collection puts him right up on the shelf with the likes of David Malouf for me. Every story is a gripping out-pouring; a horrific image of our humanity blending recurrent spiritual notions in both character and landscape. Straight from the outset, the title piece of the book, the author offers a coldness and intimacy that takes you back to you back to the first time you read Carver.

While the content does become particularly challenging to get through at stages, particularly in the final trifecta, the strength of the writing is right there with you to push you through. These are stories that can be read and reread and will keep giving more to the reader.
