Writing and mental illness make excellent bedfellows, for better or worse.

The Rapids - creative and courageous - is an extraordinary personal memoir peppered with film and literary criticism, as well as family history. With reflections on artists such as Carrie Fisher, Kanye West, Robert Lowell, Delmore Schwartz, Paul Thomas Anderson and Spalding Gray, Twyford-Moore also looks at the condition in our digital world, where someone's manic episode can unfold live in real time, watched by millions.

His own story, told unflinchingly, is shocking and sometimes blackly comic. It gives the book an edge that is not always comfortable but full of insight and empathy.

Smart, lively and well-researched, The Rapids manages to be both a wild ride and introspective at once, exploring a condition that touches thousands of people, directly or indirectly.

Sam Twyford Moore is very knowledgeable about media, film and those who have experienced mania and manic depression.
I offered the book to a friend who suffers from bi-polar, after checking with their therapist declined. I did not ask why. I'm one for normalising 'mental illness' and taking labels off things.
I enjoyed the book for it's openness. It was very analytical in terms of media and films that depicts this
condition. So sometimes because I had not seen the films made it difficult for me to relate to the discourse. Having experienced psychosis in the past and recovered, though still suffering depression, I like to read about the condition. This provided a unique perspective and a very educated reflective one about what it means to live successfully with a condition that actually contributes to the creative process.
