MACARTHUR

General Douglas MacArthur (Gregory Peck), one of the most controversial public figures of our time, is the subject of this superb biographical drama which traces his outstanding career. In 1942, with his position in the Philippines made hopeless by Japan's destruction of more than half the planes in his Far East command, MacArthur leaves pledging "I shall return!"
MacArthur does return, with riveting victories in the Pacific and the deft handling of the democratisation of Japan; he is also armed with Presidential aspirations. While serving in Korea, it is there that his colossal ego and insubordination results in dismissal by Truman in 1951. MacArthur is a compelling story which explores the many facets of him ambitious character. It clearly demonstrates his brilliance as a strategist; his lust for publicity and flair for dramatics.

ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT
Lewis Milestone's low key unpolished and deeply felt screen adaptation of the Erich Maria Remarque anti war novel has lost a little of its original impact. Years after its release it was still being banned in countries mobilizing for war. The plot follows a group of young German recruits in World War I through their passage from idealism to disillusionment. As the central character Paul Baumer (Lew Ayres) declares, "We live in the trenches and we fight , we try not to be killed, that's all." All Quiet is an anthology of now famous scenes: Ayre's trapped in a shell crater with a man he has killed; the first meeting of the recruits and the veterans; infantrymen being mowed down to machine gun visual rhythms; a moonlight swim with French farm girls; Ayres' pacifist speech to his astonished school mates; and the final shot of the soldier's hand reaching for a fatal butterfly.

CROSS OF IRON
Jame Mason and James Coburn star in this gripping account of doomed German platoon facing annihilation at Russian hands during 1943, who discover that their instinct for war is greater than their instinct for survival. While the enemy attack, two officers fuel the conflict with their hell bent lust for personal vindictiveness and glory, all part of the greater absurdity called war. Directed by Sam Peckinpah, Cross Of Iron is his only ever war film and, in true Peckinpah style, proves to be disturbing yet totally compelling.

RAID ON ROMMEL
Seven time Academy Award Nominee Richard Burton (Where Eagles Dare) is a British intelligence officer who leads a daring attack on the German shore defences at Tobruk in this explosive WWII drama. Infiltrating a German POW convoy, Captain Foster (Burton) learns that the commandos he hoped to link up with have been almost completely wiped out, and the prisoners belong to a British medical unit. Aided by McKenzie (John Colicos), one of the surviving commandos, he vows to carry out his mission, which is further complicated by the presence of an Italian general's mistress (Danielle deMetz). Together, Foster and MacWhip the ragtag bang of POWs into a fighting force that overthrows and impersonates its captors, only to stumble into an unexpected meeting with Rommel (Woldgang Preiss)!
