After Gerry Cummins (Anne Bancroft) falls victim to a sexual assault in a city divided by race during the 1960s, she gives her baby up for adoption rather than raise the bi-racial child in a bigoted neighbourhood she feels will never understand.

But as Gerry and her husband Bob (Kevin ORourke), place their new-born infant, Barbara Ann, in foster care, they do not realise that the girl has only begun a long journey guided by prejudice, isolation and an uncaring bureaucracy.
