Janey (Sarah Jessica Parker) is new to Chicago and soon meets Lynne (Helen Hunt), who shares her passion for dancing and the show "Dance TV". Janey and Lynn are determined to audition for the show, but Janey's strict and conservative father won't let her go.

Lynne talks her into snaking out and Janey impresses the judges with her gymnastic ability and is paired up with blue-collar bad boy Jeff. Together they compete against obnoxious rich girl Natalie, who has her heart set on Jeff and wants to win the contest herself.

A playful game of deception, jealousy and blackmail leads them to the final dance-off.
