Young Surfer Nic (Josh Hutcherson) thinks all his dreams have come true when he goes to visit his brother in Columbia. Against an idyllic backdrop of blue lagoons and white beaches he falls madly in love with a beautiful Columbian girl called Maria.
It all seems perfect until he meets her uncle - Pablo Escobar (Benecio Del Toro), as Nick is pulled further and further into the family business, he finds his life on the line as Pablo's drug empire begins to fall amidst a backdrop of paranoia and brutality.
