The early morning tranquillity of a diner is shattered when a lone gunman opens fire, killing innocent people and changing lives forever. The survivors include waitress Carla (Kate Beckinsale), a single mum struggling to cope; 13-year-old Anne (Dakota Fanning), who turns to God to explain the murder of her father; Dr Bruce Laraby (Guy Pearce) who suffers a loss of confidence with devastating implications; and Charlie Archenault and his daughter Kathy (Academy Award winners Forest Whitaker and Jennifer Hudson) must confront his compulsive gambling habit in order to repair their relationship. All are trying to rebuild their lives yet find themselves transforming in the most unexpected ways.
