We tend to like to believe that we and other human beings-or at least those on our side-base actions and decisions in clear thinking and analysis of date. But, unfortunately, that is seldom the case. ... We're emotional, aggressive, shortsighted, biased, slow to learn, and quick to deflect blame away from ourselves. It's a wonder we've made it this far.... Fear and panic during a crisis can overcome rational decision making [and] can lead to poor crisis management.... So, are there ways we can learn to manage catastrophe better? Yes, but they take practice. But the good news is that there are both individual and societal steps we can implement to manage crises better. But we'll save all that happy, feel-good news for the end. That's just what books do (no skipping ahead!). That's not really what you're here for anyway, is it? Mainly you want to learn about all the ways we've screwed up and why.
