Daughter of Smoke and Bone is a book unbounded by genre but located at a magical crossroads where The Passage meets Philip Pullman and Twilight meets Pan's Labyrinth.

Errand requiring immediate attention. Come.

The note was on vellum, pierced by the talons of the almost-crow that delivered it. Karou read the message. 'He never says please', she sighed, but she gathered up her things.

When Brimstone called, she always came.

In general, Karou has managed to keep her two lives in balance. On the one hand, she's a seventeen-year-old art student in Prague; on the other, errand-girl to a monstrous creature who is the closest thing she has to family. Raised half in our world, half in 'Elsewhere', she has never understood Brimstone's dark work - buying teeth from hunters and murderers - nor how she came into his keeping. She is a secret even to herself, plagued by the sensation that she isn't whole.

Now the doors to Elsewhere are closing, and Karou must choose between the safety of her human life and the dangers of a war-ravaged world that may hold the answers she has always sought.

'Remarkable and beautifully written ...The opening volume of a truly original trilogy.' Guardian

Hi! I write fantasy books. My latest is Strange The Dreamer, about a young librarian, a mythic lost city, and the half-human children of murdered gods. Check it out :-) Before that I wrote the Daughter of Smoke & Bone trilogy, which has been translated into 32 languages. It's about a blue-haired art student raised by monsters, a broken angel, and a war that has raged for 1000 years in another world. I also wrote Lips Touch: Three Times, which was a National Book Award finalist, and the Dreamdark books. As well as various short stories and novellas.

This book although it took a while to get to understand and 'get into' the world, once you do, IT IS A AMAZING YA FANTASY READ! Filled with heart pumping, jaw dropping, a crazy amount of OMGs and WHAAAAAs and even a few laughs and tears here and there, this book is crazy fantastic. The plot line is fabulously written by Laini, the characters can be described as crazy, fun, enigmatic and hilarious. There's magic, love, butt kicking and everything you could possibly want in this book. A fantastic start to an amazing trilogy and i would highly recommend it to any bookworms looking for a new YA Fantasy read :D

I’d been chipping through this one for a few months, but I just flew through the last three quarters in the last day or so.

Karou lives between two worlds. In ours, she lives in Prague and goes to school and whatnot, but her real ‘family’ are in Elsewhere. This is a different world that can be accessed through a few portals over the globe. In Elsewhere, she has been brought up by Brimstone, one of the many creatures of the world that consist of mismatched parts of animals put together. Brimstone sends her all over the world to collect teeth for him, both animal and human, but never tells her what they are for. So what happens when the portals start closing and she’s cut off from her real home?

I’d heard nothing but good things about this book, and while it isn’t quite one of my favourites, I did really enjoy it. The concept was absolutely fantastic; like with The Hunger Games and Catching Fire, it was so original. Plus, I just adored Laini Taylor’s writing style. She’s so descriptive and uses such beautiful metaphors, plus she has pink hair in real life. I mean, come on. She’s obviously amazeballs.

One thing that has been getting on my nerves lately is the YA insta-love deal. Although there was a very close shave in ‘Daughter of Smoke and Bone’, Laini handled it very well and it ended up being plausible with the plot twist towards the end. Kudos!

Like I said, not a favourite but I still very much enjoyed it. It has been well set up for the next two in the trilogy.
