A History of Art in Africa is the product of an educational initiative of the organization ACASA (Arts Council of the African Studies Association) to study the needs and requirements for a useful textbook. ACASA members personally donated field photos and historical photographs to provide cultural context.
As a result of the cooperation of a broad range of scholars, the resulting book is one that spans the entire continent - including not only Sub-Saharan Africa, but also Madagascar, the Nile Valley and Northern Africa - and incorporates the most recent research and historical works.
