There are two avenues by which we may approach the documents which enshrine the Faith of the Catholic Church -- the one purely dogmatic, the other historical....But it is, indeed, really necessary to combine the historical with the dogmatic study of the great symbols of the Faith if we wish properly to appreciate their significance; for the exact terminology of the Creeds and their allied documents cannot be fully understood unless the history embedded in the phrases be known.
