Upon its publication in 1939, the New Republic favorably reviewed A. T. & T.: The Story of Industrial Conquest, pointing out that "it bears the unmistakable marks of a skilled hand and an inquiring mind ... a penetrating analysis that no one interested in American economics can afford to miss". The New York Times considered the book "a major contribution to the education of social scientists and public officials who are seriously concerned with practical problems or regulating monopolies", and the New Yorker said that it "may turn out to be a classic". American Telephone and Telegraph was not in the least enthusiastic about this heavily documented account of the company's technical and patent operations and several decades of its financial and political maneuvers - A. T. & T. promptly purchased and destroyed whatever copies it could, and issued a book-length rebuttal two years later. N. R. Danielian's book, however, remains one of the most penetrating and revealing muckraking publications of the century.
