Let our favourite writer of narrative non-fiction take you back to a summer when America came of age and changed the world for ever.

In summer 1927, America had a booming stock market, a president who worked just four hours a day (and slept much of the rest), a devastating flood of the Mississippi, a sensational murder trial, and an unknown aviator named Charles Lindbergh who became the most famous man on earth.

It was the summer that saw the birth of talking pictures, the invention of television, the peak of Al Capone's reign of terror, the horrifying bombing of a school in Michigan, the thrillingly improbable return to greatness of over-the-hill baseball player Babe Ruth, and an almost impossible amount more.

In this hugely entertaining book, Bill Bryson spins a tale of brawling adventure, reckless optimism and delirious energy. With the trademark brio, wit and authority that make him Britain's favourite writer of narrative non-fiction, he brings to life a forgotten summer when America came of age, took centre stage, and changed the world.

This is gripping and enthralling book on America’s most eccentric era.

Bill Bryson does wonders writing about the 20’s with a touch of humor that only Bill can write.

Certainly worth the effort.

One of the best books I’ve read. An easy read, full of detail and delightfully written. Highly recommend it. I love Bill Bryson books.

I have just finished Bill Bryson’s “One Summer, America 1927” and it is a book I needed to share. I was constantly buttonholing family members nearby to share interesting snippets with. Ultimately I issued an order to them all, “You have to read this book. It is fascinating.” It is an incredibly interesting book and I now know some of the history of those great American characters such as Babe Ruth, Calvin Coolidge and Charles Lindbergh. Variously foolhardy, brave, inspired or shocking, they seem to be larger than life. No wonder they are still spoken about. The book was very well structured and written; with the addition of just one word, Mr Bryson can inject wry humour into just about any situation. I recommend this book very highly, it is entertaining, amusing and informative, and would make a wonderful gift.
