The University of Wales, Bangor has a rich and compelling history. The story of this seat of learning-from its opening in an eighteenth-century coaching inn in 1884 to a multimillion-pound investment in staff and buildings-is one of heroic struggles, personal endeavor, financial crises, and political unrest. Roberts traces the growth and development of the institution, focusing on the personalities that shaped its direction.
