Migration from Micronesian Nations Has Had Significant Impact on Guam, Hawaii, and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands
Publication Date: 01/07/2003
The U.S. is party to international agreements, in the form of Compacts of Free Assoc., that include provisions granting the citizens of 3 small Pacific Island nations the right to live & work in the U.S. One of these Compacts was enacted with the Fed. States of Micronesia & the Rep. of the Marshall Isl., & with the Rep. of Palau. Some provisions were due to expire in 2001 & were being renegotiated. However, the governments of Guam, Hawaii, & the Common. of the N. Mariana Isl. have raised concerns about the adverse financial & public health impact that they attribute to the many citizens from the Compact nations that have availed themselves of Compact migration rights. This report reviews the migration provisions of the Compact. Charts & tables.
