This is an anthology of short writings on mining in the parts of the world that fell under European influence from the mid-15th to the early-19th centuries. The majority of these writings refer to Latin America, as it was mainly here that the Europeans actually engaged in mining during that period. In other parts of the world they were largely prevented by various causes, cultural, political, or biological, from practising mining themselves. In Latin America the principle metals were gold and silver. The articles in this volume give accounts of the volume and patterns of gold and silver production, the forms of labour found in mining, and the technology of extraction and refining.
