Broadly expands Pohs' 1974 book on the subject, now in its third printing by the Arizona Historical Society. He narrates, and illustrates with over 3,700 photographs and original drawings, the full story of prehistoric and ancient oil cave and mining lights, torches, candles, medieval mine lighting, western US miners' candlesticks, oil and sunshine wick cap lamps, flame safety lamps, calcium carbide acetylene gas, underground surveyors' lamps, and other mine lighting systems. His concern is with flame lighting, so he stops when electric lights go down in the mines. He also recounts mining lore and history and the role of mining in science and commerce.
