This catalogue introduces the work of Brooklyn-based artist Ray Martin Abeyta, who was born and raised in the small town of Santa Cruz in northern New Mexico. Exploring the effects of cross-cultural contact in the Americas, Abeyta creates masterful oil paintings in a baroque, Latin American style infused with contemporary subject matter. His paintings combine ancient and contemporary Latino subjects--Cuzco style Madonnas, lowriders, Mexican wrestlers, Spanish matadores, New Mexican traditions, and the encounter of Europeans and Mesoamericans. To these themes, Abeyta adds elements that indicate a global perspective.
