Just imagine that you were living in Greece, Persia, or anywhere else in Southeast Asia, 3000 years ago and walking in a market garden. You would find plenty of gardeners selling you a “wonderful stick which has juice sweeter than honey.” The sweetmeats that you ate would have been flavored with molasses or brown sugar, extracted from the juice from this “stick”.
