The Concise Dictionary of Women Artists includes some 200 complete entries on individuals from the award-winning main dictionary. The best-known artists from the Middle Ages to the present are featured -- from Hildegard of Bingen and Elisabeth Vigee-Lebrun to Paula Rego and Judy Chicago -- as well as a range of entries on significant but less well-known artists from all periods and all media: painters, sculptors, printmakers, textile artists and photographers. Also included in full are the most broad-ranging of the introductory surveys from the main volume: these essays place the work of the individual artists in national, aesthetic and gender contexts, and were much praised by reviewers of the original volume.
