Before he was president, he was senator. Written two years prior to the election that would change the face of the United States, The Audacity of Hope discusses the importance of empathy in politics, Obama's hopes for a different America and how the ideals of its democracy can be renewed.

With intimacy and self-deprecating humour, he describes his experiences balancing his family life with his public vocation. A senator and a lawyer, a professor and a father, a Christian and a sceptic, Barack Obama has written a book of transforming power that will inspire people the world over.

A thinking and compassionate man who healthily tempers his occasional and understandable slides towards bitterness and frustration with the self-interested perpetuation of lost opportunities by his country to improve the universal health, education and human rights of its own people.
Both of Obama’s books (Dreams From My Father and The Audacity of Hope) precede his presidency and it would be wonderful to read a next volume from him to complete a trilogy on his life, rise and reign.
Like all great leaders - Martin Luther King, Nelson Mandela, Aung San Suu Kyi ( I don’t presume to understand her current circumstance, but historically a great woman), Mahatma Gandhi and others, Barack Obama’s dreams and impact are tempered by the complexity of the environment of his time. What all these great people have done is to keep the aspiration of, and efforts towards, a fair and compassionate world alive in the minds and hearts of humanity.
