This, the fourth title in Midland's new Red Star series, charts the development and service history of the first-generation of Soviet jet fighters. During the 1940s and early 1950s, the Soviets strove to keep up with western aircraft design as the Cold War got into its stride. The book features aircraft designed by such renowned fighter makers as the Mikoyan, Yakovlev and Sukhoi design bureaux. It also features the work of other design bureaux which are no longer in existence such as the Lavochkin and Alekseyev OKBs. Each type of fighter covered by the book is described in detail and is compared to other contemporary jet fighters. As with the other Red Star volumes, the extensive photographic coverage includes many pictures which have not previously been published. In addition to the photographs, the book contains many detailed drawings, three-views and specially commissioned colour sideviews. Among the aircraft featured in the book are the MiG-9, including its predecessors the I-260 and I-300, the Yakovlev Yak-7/-15/-17/-19/-25, the Lavochkin 150, 152, 154 and 174, the Sukhoi Su-9/-11/-13 and the Alekseyev I-21 and I-211.
