- Samanta Schweblin.

ENGLISH DESCRIPTION

Shortlisted for The International Booker Prize 2024

Located in rural Argentina, It's Not a River investigates the cruelty and violence of the male universe through the pacts and secret alliances made between men.

Enero and El Negro take Tilo, the adolescent son of Eusebio, their dead friend, fishing. While they drink and cook and talk and dance, they grapple with the ghosts of the past and those of the present, which become confused in the mood altered by wine and stupor. A web mixes reality and dream, facts and conjectures, islanders, water, night, fire, fish, bugs. Human, but at the same time animal and vegetable, this novel flows like a channel, a long conversation or affection between beings who love each other: mothers, children, brothers, lovers, godchildren.

With It's Not a River, Selva Almada completes her trilogy about men, inaugurated with The Wind that Raises and immediately followed by Bricklayers. In this masterful novel, her way of speaking and her extraordinary sensitivity shine again so that the characters express in their doing that which lives deep within their souls, far away from their own lives.
