For two-semester undergraduate courses in Art History Survey, and courses in Women in/and Art in departments of Art/Art History and Women's Studies.This text introduces students to the most recent and extensive scholarly research on women artists, and to gender issues relevant to the topics addressed in most survey of art history courses. Organized chronologically covering primarily western civilizations and the roles women have played in their visual cultures, it highlights contributions from Antiquity to the present. Attention is also paid to other roles for women-such as patrons, critics, and viewers-along with the ways in which women have been represented in imagery in different periods.
