The book includes chapters on the original 1888 Steel Bridge, the current bridge’s design and construction in 1909-1912; how the complex machinery operates to raise and lower the bridge’s two decks independently; history of the eastside trolleys which traveled over the bridge until 1948; the reconstruction of the bridge for MAX light rail in the 1980s; the railroads use of the lower deck for passenger and freight trains; and a bibliography.The book has a color cover on heavy paper, 60 interior pages, saddle stitched binding, four maps and over 80 photographs illustrating the history and operation of the bridge, most never before published.

Richard Thompson

Richard Thompson is a world-renowned singer, songwriter and guitarist, best known for his work in the folk rock group Fairport Convention. Rolling Stone named him as one of the Top 20 Guitarists of All Time. Thompson has received Lifetime Achievement Awards for Songwriting on both sides of the Atlantic, and is the recipient of an Ivor Novello Award. He was awarded an OBE in 2011. He continues to write and record new material, and frequently performs live at venues throughout the world.
