After reading Khaled Hosseini's first book (The Kite Runner) i knew i had to read this. When Khaled writes, it is like poetry in motion. I felt that with all 3 books he wrote.

This particular novel is about Mariam and the hardships she has to face in Afghanistan. At 15 Mariam's dad forces her to marry a man 3 times her age. Things between her and her husband do not turn out well and she becomes the punching bag for her husband. Along comes Laila who Mariam's husband ends up marrying. Despite the fact that Laila is also married to Mariam's husband(Rasheed) Mariam connects with Laila via the abuse both women have to put up with due to Rasheed. The bond between the two become strong like the bond between mother and daughter. This is where to story begins... The rest is for you to read.

It is a powerful book with a powerful meaning, giving us a better insight into Afghanistan and the hardship women have to go through. Khaled Hosseini can captivate his readers with an intriguing story and plot, i was hooked from the first page.

I loved this book! A powerful, insightful story into life in Afghanistan. A story of war, of lives lost, of violence, of friendship, of determination and bravery.

The two main female characters, Mariam and Laila, are beautiful women, who find amazing strength in each other.

Their husband, Rasheed, is a violent, bitter man who doesn't know what love is.

This book is a gripping and beautiful read.
